Hayden Panettiere’s sudden death at 36 has left her family, friends, and fans searching for answers. Now, Wladimir Klitschko, the father of her daughter, Kaya, has broken his silence.

Hayden died on August 16, 2026, after an acquaintance called 911 to report an unresponsive woman at her home in Greenville, South Carolina. Police and paramedics responded and attempted to save her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said the preliminary investigation had not indicated signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances. Her cause of death had not been publicly established at the time of the reports.

Two days after her death, Wladimir shared an emotional tribute.

“Our family is going through a time of profound shock and grief. The announcement of Hayden’s tragic death saddens me deeply. She left this world far too soon.”

Although Hayden and Wladimir were no longer together romantically, he made clear that she remained an important part of his life.

“Hayden was, although no longer my partner, an important part of my life and the mother of our daughter, Kaya,” he wrote.

He also reflected on her career and the difficulties she faced growing up in the entertainment industry.

“She built an incredible career through immense talent, while also facing the darker sides of a very demanding industry. Nothing will erase the times we shared or the place she had in our lives.”

Wladimir then turned his attention to their daughter, promising to keep Hayden’s memory alive for Kaya.

“To our daughter Kaya, I will always speak of her mother with respect and make sure she remembers the person she was.”

He ended his message with a final farewell:

“Rest easy, Hayden. May you find eternal peace. #WeLoveYouHayden.”

Hayden’s final months had been marked by several personal struggles. Earlier in 2026, she was photographed using crutches after suffering severe problems with her back and legs. She later explained that she had experienced nerve damage that caused pins and needles from her waist down and made it difficult to move her foot and toes.

In an interview, she described the experience as frightening and said she had wondered whether she would remain that way permanently.

There were also reports that Narcan was found inside the apartment where she died. However, the presence of Narcan did not establish that Hayden had suffered an opioid overdose, and authorities had not announced a cause of death.

Hayden had been open throughout her life about her struggles with postpartum depression, alcohol and opioid addiction, anxiety, and the pressures of growing up in Hollywood.

After giving birth to Kaya in 2014, Hayden later revealed that she experienced severe postpartum depression. She said she did not initially understand what was happening to her and turned to alcohol while struggling emotionally.

Her difficulties eventually affected her ability to care for Kaya.

When Kaya was still young, she began living primarily with Wladimir in Europe. Hayden later pushed back strongly against the idea that she had simply abandoned her daughter.

During an interview, she described signing the custody papers as one of the most heartbreaking experiences of her life.

“I mean, it was the worst signing those papers,” Hayden recalled. “It was like the most heartbreaking thing I’ve ever, ever had to do in my life.”

She explained that she had been struggling with her mental health and addiction at the time and believed that Kaya needed stability while she focused on getting better.

Years later, even after Hayden had recovered, she decided not to disrupt the life Kaya had built in Europe.

By then, Kaya had friends, family, activities, and a life she was comfortable with. Hayden said she felt it would have been unfair and selfish to pull her daughter away from that environment simply because she wanted her closer.

Despite living apart, Hayden maintained a close relationship with Kaya. She traveled to see her and regularly communicated with her through FaceTime.

“We talk about really deep things,” Hayden said. “We have a really intense, incredible bond.”

She also insisted that Kaya did not feel abandoned.

“She in no way feels abandoned,” Hayden said. “And that’s something that I’ve made sure to stay on top of and be very aware of.”

Hayden also spoke warmly about Wladimir, describing him as incredibly supportive and saying that the two remained close despite their separation.

“Wlad and I are still best friends,” she said.

The two had also agreed never to speak negatively about each other in front of Kaya, something Hayden said was important because of her own childhood experiences.

Hayden’s relationship with her daughter was one of the central subjects of her 2026 memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning. She hoped Kaya would eventually understand that the difficult decisions surrounding her childhood were never her fault.

“I don’t want her ever to read it and think any of it was her fault,” Hayden said.

She also wanted to correct what she considered one of the biggest misconceptions about her life.

“I think there’s been a common and, you know, a very common misconception that I just gave up my child,” she said. “That could not be further from the truth.”

Hayden also carried deep grief over the death of her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, who died in 2023 at age 28.

Jansen’s death was attributed by the medical examiner to cardiomegaly, or an enlarged heart, along with aortic valve complications.

Hayden continued to speak about him years later, saying she struggled with guilt because of his substance-abuse problems and wondered whether she could have done more to help him.

His artwork became especially meaningful to her.

“He was an incredible artist,” she said. “My favorite thing that I have is his paintings. I feel like he’s so alive in those paintings.”

In the months before her own death, Hayden had been revisiting many of the most painful chapters of her life while promoting her memoir.

She spoke about addiction, motherhood, grief, abuse, recovery, and the complicated relationship she had with her past.
