On April 25, 2006, the earth shook in Tasmania, and a gold mine swallowed three men.


Larry Knight, 44, died instantly. Todd Russell and Brant Webb were trapped inside the basket of a machine, hundreds of meters below the surface, not knowing whether anyone would come for them.


For six days, they survived on a single energy bar and water dripping from the rock, collected in their own helmets.


On the sixth day, they were found alive. A shaft was drilled to lower them food, flashlights, and magazines. They asked for something else: an iPod loaded with Foo Fighters songs.


The news reached Dave Grohl. The musician wrote a note that was lowered down the same rescue tunnel:


“Although I’m on the other side of the world, my heart is with you two, and I want you to know that when you get home, there are 2 tickets to any Foos show, anywhere, and 2 cold beers waiting for you. Deal?”


Nine days after that promise, on May 9, 2006, the two men were brought to the surface.


They had spent fourteen days underground.


Grohl didn’t forget. In October, he met with Webb at the Sydney Opera House. A year later, he recorded “Ballad of the Beaconsfield Miners” for the album Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace.


Almost twenty years later, Webb took the stage in Launceston, just a few kilometers from the mine, and heard that song again alongside Grohl.


The two men who survived together, trapped in the same basket, never spoke to each other again after the rescue.
