In the early hours of 3 September 2019, Emma Schols, a 31-year-old mother of six, woke in her home in Edsbyn, Sweden, to the sound of her two youngest sons calling out. Her husband was away on business. The television room downstairs was on fire.

She ran down barefoot, found the boys sheltering in the playroom surrounded by flames, threw herself over them, took the fire on her back and pushed them out the front door. She locked it behind her from the inside so they could not follow her back in. She had four more children upstairs.

The staircase was already burning. She climbed through it anyway. She got two children to the balcony, then went back for the others. Her youngest daughter, one-year-old Mollie, was still inside. By then Emma was losing skin. Her hair had burned away. The soles of her feet were coming off. She pulled herself along the floor through the smoke and found Mollie standing in her crib, crying.

She got her out. All six children survived without serious injury.

When Emma collapsed outside, burns covered 93% of her body. Doctors said survival at that level was uncommon. She was placed on a ventilator for three weeks. She underwent more than 20 surgeries. When she came round, her first question was: “Are my children alive?”

She was named Sweden’s Lifeguard of the Year in 2020. When asked why she kept going back in, she said simply: “If I gave birth to six children, I will get all six out.”
