Beloved Grand Haven Teacher, Husband and Six Children Identified Among Eight Found Dead in Suspicious Michigan House Fire
Grand Haven Township, MI — A quiet West Michigan neighborhood is searching for answers after eight members of the same family, including six children, were found dead inside a Grand Haven Township home following a suspicious fire Friday. Investigators say the case remains active as they work to determine exactly what happened inside the residence, where some of the victims were found with gunshot wounds.
Family members identified the victims as Amanda “Mandy” Karolkiewicz, 39, her husband, Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, and their six children, who ranged in age from approximately 5 to 15 years old. While the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office and Medical Examiner’s Office had not formally released the victims’ identities as of Saturday, relatives publicly confirmed the devastating loss through social media posts shared after learning of the deaths.
Amanda Karolkiewicz was well known throughout Grand Haven Area Public Schools as a substitute teacher at Peach Plains Elementary School. Just months before her death, the school district publicly recognized her as part of its “Gold Standard Moments” employee recognition program.
In a January Facebook post, the district praised Karolkiewicz for the compassion she showed students and coworkers, saying she consistently went above and beyond for children who were having difficult days. Colleagues described her as someone who responded with empathy, patience and care, and said she was always willing to help wherever she was needed, making Peach Plains Elementary a better place to learn and work.
The district’s recognition has taken on heartbreaking significance following Friday’s tragedy.
Emergency crews were first called to the Riverside Trail neighborhood between approximately 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. Friday after reports of the smell of smoke in the area. Firefighters searched but were unable to locate the source and eventually cleared the scene.
Just before 11:40 a.m., Ottawa County dispatchers received additional calls reporting smoke coming from a home on Riverside Trail. Firefighters returned and entered the residence to battle the fire, where they discovered multiple people dead inside.
Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Jacob Sparks said investigators later determined that at least some of the victims had suffered gunshot wounds, although officials have not yet determined each person’s official cause of death.
“It’s too early for me to say that it’s a murder-suicide,” Sparks told reporters during a Friday evening news conference. “I can tell you that that’s one theory that we have and we’re still looking to see if we can verify that.”
Investigators have not disclosed how many victims sustained gunshot wounds, whether a firearm was recovered from the residence, or what sequence of events led to the fire. Autopsies are expected to help determine how each victim died.
Authorities also confirmed they do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the public.
“We believe that everybody who was involved in the situation is in the residence,” Sparks said.
The Michigan State Police Fire Investigation Unit is assisting in determining whether the fire was intentionally set. Officials said heavy smoke damage inside the home has complicated the investigation, requiring detectives, forensic specialists and arson investigators to carefully process the scene.
As news of the tragedy spread, grieving relatives shared emotional tributes online.
“My little sister Mandy, her husband, and my six nieces and nephews,” Mandy’s sister, Molly Cessna, wrote in a Facebook post.
“Everything’s just blurry. Please continue to pray, friends. Please continue to pray as we try and piece everything together. Our hearts are utterly shattered. Tragic doesn’t even touch it.”
Amanda’s parents, Steve and Becky Lawwill, also shared a family photograph and wrote that they were “so grateful for the joy they brought into our life,” adding that they were “just so shattered.”
Friday evening, Grand Haven Area Public Schools Superintendent Kristin Perkowski issued a letter to district families acknowledging the devastating loss.
“It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge reports of a devastating incident in Grand Haven Township earlier today involving the loss of multiple lives, including several school-aged children,” Perkowski wrote.
She said information remains limited as the sheriff’s office continues its investigation but assured families the district is preparing support services for students, staff and community members despite school being out of session. The district also encouraged anyone struggling with the tragedy to utilize available mental health resources, including the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and Ottawa County Community Mental Health services.
Neighbors described the Karolkiewicz children as an energetic and familiar presence throughout the neighborhood.
“If you heard noise in this neighborhood, it largely came from those kids running around playing with other kids,” neighbor Scott Fischer told WOOD-TV. “To see something like this and to come home to this, literally our hearts dropped.”
Neighbor Mark Brininstool said the silence left behind will be difficult for the community.
“Kids made a lot of noise in the neighborhood, which is a good thing. Exciting, they’re out playing, and now there’s going to be that void. And that’s really sad.”
Capt. Sparks said investigators are committed to conducting a complete and thorough investigation before drawing conclusions.
“There are eight people. There’s a very large scene. There’s numerous detectives that have been in here for most of the day,” Sparks said. “It’s a complicated scene, a complex scene.”
Authorities say autopsies, forensic testing and continued examination of the fire scene will be critical in determining exactly how the eight family members died and whether the deaths resulted from a murder-suicide or another sequence of events.
