In May 2018, 18-year-old Cameron Herrin was driving his new Ford Mustang GT along Bayshore Boulevard in Tampa, Florida. The car had been given to him as a high school graduation gift. While driving, he was racing alongside another car driven by his friend, John Barrineau.

At the same time, 24-year-old Jessica Raubenolt was crossing the road while pushing her 21-month-old daughter, Lillia, in a stroller. Herrin’s Mustang struck both of them at a very high speed. Data from the car later showed that he had been driving at about 102 mph in a 45 mph zone before braking moments before the crash.

The collision had tragic consequences. Lillia suffered severe injuries and passed away two days later. The incident led to Cameron Herrin being charged with two counts of vehicular homicide.

The case attracted significant public attention. In April 2021, Hillsborough Circuit Judge Christopher Nash sentenced Herrin to 24 years in prison, a sentence that was six years below the maximum allowed under the law.

After the sentencing, Herrin gained a large following on TikTok. Videos related to his case and sentencing received a combined total of around two billion views. Many supporters argued that he deserved a lighter sentence, and some comments focused on his appearance, claiming he was “too cute” for prison. The online attention led to a Change.org petition calling for his release, which collected more than 25,000 signatures.

The case sparked intense debate online about accountability, sentencing, and the consequences of reckless driving.
