Sheriff Says Nancy Guthrie’s Kidnapping May Have Been Targeted
Authorities investigating the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie say they believe the kidnapping may have been intentional and directed specifically at her.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos shared new details about the case in an interview with NBC News, saying investigators think they understand the possible motive behind the crime, though they are not completely certain.
“We believe we know why the kidnapper did this and we believe that it was targeted, but we’re not 100% sure,” Nanos said. He added that it would be irresponsible to tell the public they are safe simply because the Guthrie family may have been the intended target.
“Don’t think for a minute that because it happened to the Guthrie family, you’re safe,” the sheriff warned. “Keep your wits about you.”
Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Today show co-host Savannah Guthrie, was taken from her home in Tucson, Arizona, during the early morning hours of February 1. Investigators believe she was abducted against her will.
Security footage from the area shows a masked and armed individual approaching her home and tampering with the doorbell camera shortly before the abduction. The suspect has been described as a man between 5 feet 9 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall with an average build. He was reportedly carrying a black Ozark Trail Hiker Pack backpack.
Investigators are also examining the possibility that the suspect may not have acted alone.
Inside the home, authorities discovered mixed DNA, which they hope will eventually help identify the person responsible. However, the presence of multiple DNA samples has made the investigation more complicated.
As the search approaches its seventh week, no suspects or persons of interest have been officially identified.
Investigators have also been canvassing the neighborhood and speaking with residents. Some neighbors reported possible internet service disruptions on the night Nancy disappeared, something authorities are now examining as part of the investigation. Officials had previously asked residents to provide footage from their Ring doorbell cameras.
Meanwhile, Nancy’s daughter Savannah Guthrie shared an emotional message online, saying her family continues to fear for her mother’s safety and misses her deeply.
The family has donated $500,000 to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in support of ongoing efforts to locate missing persons.
The FBI is currently offering a reward of $100,000 for information that could help locate Nancy Guthrie or lead to the arrest of the person responsible for her disappearance.
Authorities continue to urge anyone with information about the case to come forward.
