I Went on a Date with My Brother's Friend – Turned out It Was a Trap

My brother’s latest setup landed me on a disastrous date with his friend, Stewart—and we ended up stuck in a fancy restaurant with an unpaid bill.

“Jess, you’ve got to meet this guy,” my brother Adam said, grinning like he’d just discovered something life-changing. He lounged on my couch, flipping through channels.

“Who is he?” I asked, barely looking up.

“Stewart. Works with me. Solid guy—good job, nice car, everything.”

I rolled my eyes. “Another one of your setups?”

“No, this one’s different. You’ll like him.”

I hesitated. Adam’s track record was terrible, but something about his confidence made me curious. “Fine. But if this goes wrong, I’m done listening to you.”

That evening, Stewart picked me up in a sleek sedan that looked brand new. He was charming, polite, and easy to talk to. I started relaxing.

He took me to a high-end restaurant downtown. It was way fancier than I expected. The menu prices nearly gave me a heart attack, but Stewart smiled and said, “Order whatever you want. It’s on me.”

Dinner was perfect. We laughed, talked, and everything felt effortless—until the bill came.

Stewart handed over his card confidently.

A few minutes later, the waitress returned, looking uneasy. “I’m sorry, sir… your card was declined.”

Stewart frowned. “That’s not possible. Try again.”

She did. Twice. Same result.

His attitude changed instantly. “Are you sure you’re doing it right?” he snapped.

People started staring. I felt embarrassed.

“Maybe you have another card?” I suggested.

He turned to me, frustrated. “Do you have cash?”

I blinked. “I told you I can’t afford this place.”

“Just pay it,” he said. “I’ll sort it out later.”

“No,” I replied firmly. “This was your idea.”

The manager and a security guard soon got involved. The situation escalated quickly.

I stepped away to the bathroom, trying to calm down. Then my phone buzzed.

It was Adam: “How’s the date going?”

I stared at the message, furious.

When I got back, Stewart was arguing with the staff. They were threatening to call the police if the bill wasn’t paid.

Outside, I finally confronted him. “Did my brother know you couldn’t pay?”

Stewart sighed. “He said he’d transfer money to me for tonight… and he hired the car to impress you. I guess he never actually sent the money.”

That’s when it clicked.

This wasn’t just a bad date—it was a setup.

I called Adam immediately. “What did you do?!”

He laughed. “Relax. Just adding some excitement.”

“Get here now and fix this.”

A few minutes later, he showed up, still smiling like it was all a joke. He paid the bill and shrugged. “See? Problem solved.”

I was furious. “You humiliated me. This isn’t funny.”

“Lighten up,” he said. “It was just a prank.”

Stewart apologized, clearly embarrassed. “I didn’t know he’d do this.”

“It’s not your fault,” I said. “But this was too much.”

We stood there awkwardly before going our separate ways.

As I walked home, one thing was clear—I couldn’t trust my brother the same way again. Some lines, once crossed, change everything.
