Sheriff Believes Nancy Guthrie Went to Bed Before She Was Abducted Overnight
Investigators believe Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today show host Savannah Guthrie, went to bed after returning home on the night she disappeared before being abducted sometime overnight, according to Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos.
Nancy was last seen on Saturday, January 31, around 9:48 p.m., when family members dropped her off at her Tucson, Arizona, home after dinner at her daughter Annie Guthrie’s house. Surveillance footage shows her garage door closing at approximately 9:50 p.m., leading investigators to believe she entered her home and prepared for bed.
Sheriff Nanos clarified that earlier statements suggesting Nancy was “taken from her bed” were meant figuratively, not literally. “We know she had gone to bed,” he said, though authorities are unsure what happened afterward. Investigators do not know whether she got up to answer the door, use the bathroom, or move around the house before vanishing.
There was no activity detected at the home until 1:47 a.m., when Nancy’s doorbell camera disconnected. At 2:12 a.m., the system registered motion, but no video footage exists because there was no active subscription. About 40 minutes later, at 2:28 a.m., Nancy’s pacemaker app showed a disconnection from her phone, raising further concern.
Despite the lack of clarity, Sheriff Nanos has repeatedly said he believes Nancy is still alive.
Authorities have not identified any suspects. Several alleged ransom notes sent to media outlets are under investigation, though officials say they have not provided proof of life. One individual has been arrested in connection with a fraudulent ransom demand unrelated to the actual abduction.
Savannah Guthrie and her siblings have released emotional video messages appealing directly to whoever may have taken their mother, asking for confirmation that she is alive.
Law enforcement continues to investigate and urges anyone with information to contact the FBI or the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
