It was discovered that after this decline, Sheila and Clay had left their daughter on their couch to suffer in her excrement and allowed insects to eat at her body, failing to attempt to get her medical care.

Sheila and Clay Fletcher were charged both sentenced to 20 years in prison 

Authorities later described the condition of the home as one of the most disturbing scenes they had encountered. Investigators said Lacey had effectively become fused to the couch after years of immobility. The room carried a strong odor, and layers of waste had accumulated around her body. Officials concluded that her death was not sudden, but the result of prolonged and extreme neglect.

An autopsy revealed that Lacey weighed only around 96 pounds at the time of her death and suffered from multiple medical complications related to chronic neglect. The coroner determined her cause of death to be severe medical neglect, noting that she had infections, malnutrition, and extensive skin breakdown. Experts later testified that her condition would have developed over many years, not days or weeks.

During court proceedings, prosecutors argued that Lacey had opportunities for medical intervention that were never pursued. Evidence showed that she had previously been diagnosed with autism and social anxiety, but had not been under consistent medical supervision for years. The prosecution maintained that her parents failed to seek professional care despite obvious warning signs.

The case sparked national outrage, with many questioning how such long-term neglect could occur without outside intervention. Neighbors and community members expressed shock, stating they had little knowledge of Lacey’s condition inside the home. The tragedy prompted renewed discussions about adult protective services and the responsibility to report suspected abuse or neglect.

The court emphasized that while Lacey was an adult, she was fully dependent on her parents for care.
