New Surveillance Images Bring Hope in Search for Nancy Guthrie, Experts Say
Law enforcement officials say newly released surveillance images and video in the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie could be a critical breakthrough, raising optimism that the person seen at her door the night she vanished may finally be identified.
The footage, released Tuesday, Feb. 10, shows a masked individual wearing gloves approaching the front door of Guthrie’s home in Tucson, Arizona. Authorities believe the person was armed and tampered with the home’s front door camera shortly before Guthrie disappeared.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said the video was recovered from residual backend data and shows an individual appearing to interfere with the camera on the morning of her disappearance.
Former FBI hostage negotiator Chip Massey told PEOPLE the footage represents a major step forward in the investigation.
“Before, we were working from almost nothing,” Massey said. “Now we have the image of the person breaking into the house. We’ll know height, weight — and more importantly, somebody out there knows exactly who this is.”
Massey added that the key question is whether that person will come forward.
Former FBI assistant director Kieran Ramsey said releasing the footage is meant to jog public memory and increase pressure on anyone involved.
“This public exposure raises the stress on anyone connected to this, especially someone who may have played a smaller role and didn’t expect this level of attention,” Ramsey said.
Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Today show host Savannah Guthrie, was last seen on Saturday, Jan. 31, after being dropped off at her home at 9:48 p.m. Her family reported her missing the following day when she failed to attend church.
Authorities later confirmed she was taken against her will. A trail of blood, confirmed to be hers, was found on the front steps of her home.
In the days following her disappearance, alleged kidnappers sent ransom notes to multiple media outlets. However, federal authorities later stated they were not aware of any direct contact between the suspects and the family.
After the surveillance footage was released, Savannah Guthrie shared the images on Instagram, writing, “We believe she is alive. Bring her home.”
The FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Office are urging anyone with information to come forward.
