New Evidence Suggests Nancy Guthrie Kidnapping Suspect Made a Crucial Mistake – Latest Update

Nancy Guthrie, mother of “Today” show co-host Savannah Guthrie, was abducted from her Tucson, Arizona home on February 1, prompting a large-scale criminal investigation.

Authorities recently released previously unrecovered Nest camera footage from outside Nancy’s front door. The video shows a masked and armed individual approaching the home, interfering with the camera, disconnecting it, and taking it away. Investigators believe the suspect assumed that unplugging the device would erase any recorded footage, especially since Nancy did not have a Nest subscription.

However, private investigator Andy Kay explained that even without a subscription, Nest cameras transmit live footage to servers. Normally, new images overwrite old ones. But because the suspect disconnected the camera, the final transmitted images were not overwritten and remained stored on backend systems. Authorities were able to recover this residual data, revealing the suspect’s actions.

In the footage, the individual appears to adjust the camera and at one point attempts to cover it with foliage. The suspect was described as possibly inexperienced, with what appeared to be a weapon incorrectly holstered.

Savannah Guthrie shared the footage publicly, urging anyone who recognizes the suspect to come forward. She expressed hope that her mother is still alive and pleaded for her safe return. The family has reportedly received ransom demands requesting millions in bitcoin, and Savannah and her siblings have made public appeals to the captor.

During the investigation, a man identified as Carlos was briefly detained following a traffic stop south of Tucson. Authorities searched a location connected to him and informed him he was being detained for kidnapping. Carlos said he asked officers, “Kidnapping of who?” He stated he works for GLS in Tucson and may have delivered a package to Nancy’s home but denied any involvement. He said he had never heard of Nancy prior to the arrest. He was later released due to insufficient evidence.

The investigation has also examined Nancy’s final known movements. She had dinner with family on the evening of January 31 and was dropped off at home between 9:30 and 9:45 p.m. It was initially believed her daughter Annie had driven her home, but later reports clarified that Annie’s husband, Tommaso Cioni, had dropped her off instead.

Nancy was reported missing the next morning when she failed to attend church. Family members who went to check on her discovered signs of forced entry and a struggle inside the home, including blood. The residence was declared a crime scene.

Authorities confirmed this is being treated as a criminal abduction, not a missing persons case. Biological evidence was found at the scene, and the FBI has joined the investigation, particularly to analyze ransom communications sent to the family and media outlets.

Law enforcement has stated that no official suspect or person of interest has been publicly identified. They have also denied claims that any specific family member has been formally named as a suspect.

As the search continues, investigators are pursuing multiple leads, including reports of a suspicious individual seen near the neighborhood weeks before the disappearance. The normally quiet Catalina Foothills community remains on edge as authorities work to locate Nancy and identify the person responsible.
