Investigators believe they may have identified where the suspect in the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie purchased the clothing he wore the night she vanished, offering a significant new lead in the case.
Nancy is believed to have been kidnapped from her Tucson, Arizona home in the early morning hours of February 1. Surveillance footage later released by authorities shows an armed individual wearing a ski mask, zip-up fleece jacket, gloves, pants, and carrying a black Ozark Trail Hiker backpack as he approached her front porch.
According to Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, the jacket, pants, ski mask, and backpack were purchased from Walmart. Authorities are still determining whether the items were bought online or in-store. Investigators have reviewed surveillance footage from multiple Walmart locations in Arizona, and the company has provided records of recent purchases of the Ozark Trail Hiker backpack, including sales outside the Tucson area. Officials described identifying the backpack brand as one of the most promising breakthroughs so far.
Another key development came when investigators collected DNA from Nancy’s property that does not belong to her or anyone in close contact with her. Authorities have not disclosed where the DNA was found but are working to determine who it belongs to.
Several gloves were also recovered during the investigation, including one found about two miles from Nancy’s home. The FBI said the DNA profile from that glove appears to match gloves worn by the individual seen in the surveillance footage.
Nancy was last seen on the evening of January 31 after being dropped off at her longtime home by family members. Authorities believe she was abducted sometime overnight.
In addition to the physical evidence, alleged ransom notes connected to Nancy’s disappearance were sent to several media outlets. Savannah Guthrie and her siblings later posted a video message stating they are willing to pay for her safe return and expressing hope that she is still alive.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to pursue leads and analyze evidence.
