Another Alex Pretti Video from 11 Days Before His Death Reveals New Details

A disturbing video recorded just 11 days before Alex Pretti was fatally shot by U.S. Border Patrol officers has surfaced, offering new insight into the events leading up to his death in Minneapolis.

The footage, captured on January 13, 2026, during tense protests in the city, shows a man believed to be Pretti in a heated confrontation with federal agents. Recorded by a documentary crew, the video depicts chaotic moments in which the man spits toward agents and kicks a government vehicle, shattering its rear light. An agent then exits the vehicle, chases him on foot, and forcefully tackles him to the ground.

In the video, the man appears to have what looks like a handgun tucked into his waistband. That image is now under close review by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The footage captures only a brief portion of the encounter, and it remains unclear what led up to the confrontation or what followed immediately afterward. Authorities have not disclosed how or why Pretti initially became a subject of federal attention.

Federal Surveillance of Protesters

According to sources who spoke with CNN, federal immigration officers deployed in Minneapolis were actively collecting personal information on protesters and individuals labeled as agitators. Alex Pretti was among those documented.

About a week before his death, Pretti reportedly suffered a broken rib after being tackled by federal officers during a protest. Sources claim he had attempted to intervene in what he believed was an unlawful detention of others. While details about how Pretti was tracked remain unclear, CNN obtained a memo sent earlier this month instructing agents to gather images, license plate numbers, identification details, and hotel information related to protesters and agitators, consolidating all collected data into a single report.

In response to these claims, DHS issued a brief statement saying it had “no record of this incident.”

Accusations of Targeting Peaceful Protesters

Pretti’s earlier confrontation with federal agents is now being viewed as part of a broader and increasingly aggressive enforcement strategy during the Minneapolis protests. According to reports, officers were ordered to collect intelligence on protesters even when their activities appeared to fall under First Amendment protections.

This approach has drawn intense criticism, with civil rights advocates questioning how protesters and bystanders were treated during immigration operations and crackdowns.

Despite the backlash, DHS has defended its tactics, warning of ongoing threats to officers during enforcement actions and placing blame on protesters for interfering with operations. The agency recently promoted an online tip form encouraging the public to report individuals accused of harassing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin defended the agency’s actions, stating that when law enforcement encounters individuals who obstruct or assault officers, records are created to support prosecution, calling it “standard protocol.”

Injuries Before the Fatal Shooting

New details have also emerged about the injury Pretti sustained days before his death. A source familiar with the incident said Pretti had pulled over after seeing ICE officers chasing a family. He reportedly shouted and blew a whistle in an attempt to intervene.

According to the source, Pretti was tackled by multiple agents, one of whom pressed down on his back. Though he was released at the scene, he later sought medical treatment and was diagnosed with a broken rib. Medical records reviewed by CNN confirm he received medication consistent with that injury. Pretti reportedly told the source that during the incident, he feared he was going to die.

DHS Account of the Fatal Encounter

Following Pretti’s death on January 24, 2026, DHS released its own account of the shooting. The agency stated that officers were conducting a targeted operation when Pretti approached them carrying a 9mm semi-automatic handgun.

According to DHS, officers attempted to disarm him, but he resisted violently. One agent then fired his weapon, citing fear for his life and the safety of others. DHS said medics attempted lifesaving measures, but Pretti was pronounced dead at the scene. The agency also claimed he carried no identification and had two magazines on him.

Moments after the shooting, DHS reported that approximately 200 people rushed the scene, allegedly obstructing and assaulting officers. Crowd control measures were deployed, and the agents involved were placed on administrative leave. Later government documents confirmed that two agents discharged their weapons during the encounter.

Leadership Shake-Up and Political Fallout

Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino addressed the shooting at a press conference, criticizing politicians, activists, and journalists for what he described as rhetoric that vilified law enforcement. He insisted that enforcing the law is a duty and stated that bringing a weapon to an active scene was a personal decision made by the individual involved. Bovino declined to speculate on the number of shots fired, saying the investigation would determine the facts.

Within days, Bovino was abruptly removed from his role as Border Patrol’s “commander at large.” Sources said he would return to his previous post in California before retiring.

According to reports, his removal signaled a shift within the Trump administration following widespread public outrage over Pretti’s death. Officials reportedly began re-evaluating aggressive enforcement tactics in Minneapolis. After speaking with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, President Trump announced that Tom Homan would oversee the federal response in the state. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and close advisers also reportedly came under increased scrutiny.

A Case Under Intense Scrutiny

From the release of the January 13 video to the sudden leadership changes, each new revelation has intensified public interest and concern over the circumstances surrounding Alex Pretti’s death.
