After Losing Custody Mother Kills Child with Sleep Medication
A 23-year-old Minnesota woman has been charged with second-degree murder after allegedly administering a fatal dose of sleep medication to her 18-month-old daughter, just hours after losing custody of the child in court.
Maige Elizabeth Yang is accused of killing her daughter, De'Ali Blia Delgado, at a home in the Minneapolis suburb of Champlin.
Authorities say the child's father, Erick Delgado, had been granted temporary custody of De'Ali during a court hearing earlier that same day. Following the ruling, Yang reportedly returned home with the child and took her into a bedroom, locking the door behind them.
According to the criminal complaint, Yang's father later forced his way into the room after being unable to enter. He discovered his granddaughter on the floor with her lips turning blue and immediately called 911.
Both Yang and the child were rushed to a local hospital. De'Ali was pronounced dead, while Yang was treated for what officials described as an apparent attempt to take her own life.
During questioning, Yang allegedly admitted to investigators that she had poured a "significant amount" of sleep medication into the toddler's bottle. Police records state she told officers she wanted to "make the pain go away" and hoped her daughter would "pass peacefully in her sleep."
Erick Delgado, the child's father, expressed his devastation in a statement.
"My baby girl De'Ali Blia Delgado was not just taken away from me, she was murdered," Delgado wrote. "I had finally won custody of my beautiful baby on Friday, January 9th at 11:30 AM and by 4 PM her life was gone. I fought my hardest for you, and the justice system failed you."
Yang has been released from the hospital and booked into the Hennepin County Jail on a $1.5 million bond.
