Matthew learned that Thompson was well-connected in town and allegedly bribed local officials, which suggested a possible explanation for the lack of official response. Despite the disappointment, Matthew remained hopeful for eventual justice. One day, county authorities arrived at Thompson's property to investigate a land encroachment complaint. They discovered that Thompson had illegally expanded his property into both neighboring properties and a protected forest, violating zoning laws and environmental regulations. The authorities informed Matthew of the neighbor's violations and asked if he had signed any agreements allowing the expansion. Matthew denied any such agreement and provided the evidence he had collected. The county authorities issued a notice to the neighbor requiring him to remove the unauthorized structures, pay a hefty fine, and restore the property to its original state. Matthew felt a sense of satisfaction that his neighbor was finally facing the consequences of his actions, but he also realized that the neighbor's actions might have financial implications for him if the neighbor failed to comply. Despite the potential costs, Matthew decided to let the neighbor face the consequences of his own actions.


A neighbor's disregard for property rights and environmental regulations led to a confrontation with a disabled veteran, Matthew.
