Thompson was shot during the early hours of the morning.  The reason behind Sotelo's sudden decision to open fire on Thompson at approximately 3 a.m. remains unknown.  Using a 9 mm handgun, Sotelo fired 13 rounds, fatally wounding Thompson.  Most of the shots hit Thompson in the back as he tried to escape the attack.  Additionally, a bullet from Sotelo's gun went through a wall and struck his brother in the face as he slept in another room, according to prosecutors.
